  • A proud and practical heritage

With a heritage dating back 120 years in the industrial powerhouse of west-central Scotland, University of the West of Scotland (UWS) has built a reputation for relevant, practical work that makes a tangible difference to the economy and society, locally and internationally. That tradition holds true today, with a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach, together with a focus on working with industry, government and other institutions to achieve real and beneficial progress.

Pursuing “Research Excellence with Relevance” across three thematic global and regional challenges of Health, Society and Sustainability, the University offers exceptional opportunities for ambitious academics, and a dynamic fast-track environment for research.

Our research work across these three themes reflects our collaborative, multi-disciplinary culture. For example our work on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia impacts on all three themes - and brings together scientists, health professionals, psychologists, computing scientists and environmentalists in the search for practical and effective measures to improve people’s lives. A similar cross-discipline approach has been applied to aquaculture, the built environment, education, social science, the creative industries and many other fields.

  • An exceptional student experience

    95 percent

In teaching, UWS has achieved impressive levels of student satisfaction, with a number of subjects coming top in the National Student Survey for 2016. 95% of UWS graduates are in work or further study within 6 months, and excellent links with industry mean students are unusually well prepared and integrated into the world of work when they leave the University.

The University has recently doubled its number of research-active academics, secured the European Commission’s HR Excellence in Research Award, obtained Athena Swan Bronze accreditation, and achieved consistently positive ratings in the Research Excellence Framework.

The University’s academics are involved in a range of research initiatives, nationally and internationally including pioneering work in gravitational waves, spearheading development of the new 5G mobile network, developing world-leading thin-film technology and producing breakthrough research on dementia and Alzheimer’s.

As a result of our successes, we’re delighted to announce a range of exciting academic opportunities across our Schools with exceptional scope for advancement in research and teaching, for established academics and those at an earlier stage in their careers.
