Chris Brookmyre Lecture
The University hosted an audience with bestselling Scottish novelist Christopher Brookmyre as part of its Inspiring People series, at the Paisley Campus on Tuesday 9 March 2010.
Under the topic ‘Never let the facts get in the way of a good story’ Brookmyre gave an insight into the depiction of journalism and the media in his fiction.
Mixing comedy, politics and social comment, Brookmyre’s novels tackle issues of corruption, crime and social injustice. His latest work ‘Pandaemonium’ is Brookmyre’s thirteenth novel to date. Among his awards, he holds the Critics’ First Blood Award for Best First Crime Novel of the Year [1996] for ‘Quite Ugly One Morning’ and the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction [2006] for ‘All Fun and Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye’. In 2007 he received the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Writing.
Gill Troup, Depute Principal of University of the West of Scotland, said: “Christopher Brookmyre is one of the country’s leading authors and has a strong connection with the West of Scotland, having been born and raised in Barrhead. We are delighted that he took part in our Inspiring People series and provided a highly entertaining insight into his work.”
This Inspiring People event was held as part of a full-day Creative Choices Festival at which creative industry experts and practitioners, students and members of the public had the chance to take part in a series of workshops and seminars on the creative and cultural industries in Scotland.
