''In sickness and in health"'
The inaugural lecture by Paul Martin, University of the West of Scotland's new Dean of Faculty of Education, Health and Social Sciences took place on Wednesday 23 September.
The lecture, entitled "In sickness and in health" forms part of our Inspiring People Leadership Series. In his lecture, Paul identified the national and global health drivers that currently exist and looked at those of the future.
Until February 2009 Paul was Chief Nursing Officer and Director for Health Workforce for Scotland. Paul was appointed as CNO in 2004 and in this role he advised the Cabinet secretary and Ministers on all matters relating to nursing, midwifery, health visiting and the allied health professions. Paul was lead for a number of national policy areas, particularly Healthcare Associated Infection, Professional Regulation and Patient Experience. In 2005 he also took responsibility for Workforce. He was responsible in this role for workforce planning, development and education, as well as pay, reward and staff governance. Prior to this Paul was Deputy Chief Executive (Modernisation), Highland Direct Health Services (formerly Chief Executive, Highland Primary Care NHS Trust), a post he took up in July 2002.
Paul was previously Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals in Renfrewshire and Inverclyde Primary Care NHS Trust for 3½ years, and Director of Nursing and Community Services, NHS Borders for 4½ years.
Paul has a broad experience in nursing, having trained and practiced as a general nurse, a midwife and a health visitor. He has extensive general management experience.
