Roddy Williamson Lecture

Thursday 3rd December 2009

“Models for the Amateur Brain Surgeon”

Professor Roddy Williamson, UWS Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, delivered a public lecture on our changing view of how the brain works, showing that this is often modelled on the contemporary level of technology. Williamson demonstrated how studies on simple organisms, such as plants and snails, have provided useful models for deriving the basic neural principles that underpin neuroscience and our current understanding of human brain function.

Roddy Williamson, who joined UWS in May 2009, was previously Director of the University of Plymouth’s Marine Institute, and before that was Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Science at Plymouth. His main neuroscience research was funded by the Wellcome Trust through a long-term Senior Fellowship in Biomedical Science.
