How to Apply

All applications for full-time study are completed online through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) for September entry via the web-based application process. This applies to both home and overseas students, and even for advanced entry in Years 2, 3 or 4.

The UWS UCAS code is U40 and all of the programmes available to study at UWS are available on the UCAS website, www.ucas.com

If you require guidance and help on completing your application please visit the UCAS website, www.ucas/ac/uk/students/apply or contact UCAS on 0871 468 0468.

When to Apply

UCAS can start receiving applications for entry in 2012 from 1 September 2011 onwards.
You should apply as soon as have made an informed decision after attending Open Days, speaking to Academic Admissions Officers or even current students. Universities are obliged to consider all applications that are submitted to UCAS by 15 January. Any applications received after this date are considered by institutions at their discretion, and no guarantee can be made that they will give any or the same level of consideration as applications received before it.

How many course(s) can I apply for?

Applicants may make just a single selection on their UCAS form for a particular programme, however the maximum number of choices an applicant has is 5.

How much will it cost?

There is a fee to apply through UCAS.  If you are only applying to one programme there is a single application fee of £11 and for more than one choice the cost is £22.

The Application

All applications are considered fairly taking into account actual and predicted grades; however the entry requirements and conditional offers will vary depending on the applicant and the particular School/Programme that you have applied for.

How are applicants assessed at UWS?

When assessing an application for undergraduate study, the Admissions Office or Academic Admissions Officer will normally consider the following information on the UCAS form:

  • Academic ability and potential as shown by Qualifications shown in the UCAS form
  • Personal statement, explaining why you’re choosing a programme is essential.
  • Submitted work, where requested or test results that forms part of the assessment
  • Performance, audition or interview.
  • Related work or voluntary experience showing commitment to a chosen career
  • Extra-curricular activities, achievements and interests.
  • Academic reference

Will I be interviewed?

There are normally only interviews within the following Schools:

  • Education
  • Health, Nursing and Midwifery (HNM)
  • Social Sciences
  • Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI)
  • Sciences (for Sports programmes)

How are offers made?

Offers are made by the Admissions Office for the bulk of applications to agreed academic entry requirements provided by each School. However for applications to programmes within Education; HNM; Social Sciences; CCI; and Sports programmes these applications are all assessed individually by the Academic Admissions Officer within the School as a result of the competitive nature of these programmes and the requirement to arrange interviews.

The decision that is made will either be unconditional, conditional or unsuccessful. Conditional means we need further qualifications or information from you before we can finally confirm your offer. If you are studying either an HNC or HND qualification please ensure that you send a copy of your results to the Admissions Office as soon as you receive them, ideally by the 31st of August.  It is your responsibility to ensure that we have your results.

If you receive an unsuccessful decision it either means you have not met the necessary academic entry requirements, or have not performed well at interview or audition.

We aim to assess all applications within 28 days from submission for all standard applications, however at peak times our turnaround time may be slightly longer.  If your application has to be reviewed by the School we again aim to review the application as quickly as possible but the process will take longer but we will keep you fully informed.

Further Considerations

If you are applying to programmes within Education, HNM, and Social Work applicants are subject to a Criminal Records check through the PVG Scheme. Previous criminal convictions need not exclude you, but all convictions must be declared and some offences may result in an unsuccessful application. Please note that for nursing professions there is no such thing as a ‘spent’ conviction. Also, admonished cases or cases which do not come to court may be investigated.

HNM applicants must also be passed fit by an Occupational Health nurse. Please note that your appointment for this will be arranged by the School. To protect your privacy, neither of these checks will normally be carried out until an offer has been made.

What happens if I do not satisfy the conditions of my offer?

Even if you do not get the grades we asked for, we won't automatically reject your application. Instead we'll review it again, paying particular attention to the personal statement, reference and past academic performance. You may, therefore, still be offered a place despite not having achieved the exact conditions required.
