Artist Teacher
The MEd Artist Teacher programme is part of the National Society for Education in Art and Design [NSEAD] Artist Teacher Scheme, a scheme, which supports the continuing professional development of teachers and others working in the field of art and design education.
The MEd Artist Teacher programme at UWS provides teachers and others working within the sector the opportunity to refresh ones own visual arts practice against the ‘real world’ contexts of contemporary art and culture. It enables participants to critically examine and evaluate models of art educational practice and pedagogy in historical and contemporary contexts including Curriculum for Excellence. The MEd Artist Teacher programme helps develop a community of practice which is both sustainable and supportive and which is driven ultimately by the challenges faced by art and design teachers in the 21st Century.
The course is built around Web 2.0 technologies which includes the use of Blackboard - the university’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which supports online learning and teaching and can be accessed by registered users from anywhere in the world using the Internet. The use VoiceThread for whole group online seminars will also be used along with other social networking sites. The Blended Learning route will have one face-to-face meeting per module using seminar space within the Glasgow Museums’ network of galleries.

COURSE FEES
The course fees for the 2010/11 academic year are £210 per module (20 credit points). Modules can be paid for on a pay as you go basis and the University offers a payments plan for students.
COURSE FUNDING
Depending on income [£22K or less], participants may be able to get ILA (Individual Learning Account) funding. An ILA 500 account can pay for modules 1 and 2 when they are taken in one academic year, while an ILA 200 account the following year can pay for a third module. Potential students can apply "Online" to the ILA where you can get instant confirmation to advise if you are eligible or not. Information on other sources of funding.
COURSE CONTENTS
The MEd Artist Teacher degree is unique to Scotland in its on-line / blended learning modes of delivery and in its close partnerships with the NSEAD and Glasgow Museums.
The course offers the chance for a sustained and serious re-evaluation of ones existing art practice within a critical and supportive environment.
Note: there are three stages to the MEd Artist Teacher (180 credits) programme. However, you can exit earlier with Postgraduate Certificate Artist Teacher (60 credits) or Postgraduate Diploma Artist Teacher (120 credits).
All Modules are at SCQF level 11 and are 20 credits each except Module 7 which is 60 credits.

MODULE SUMMARIES
Visual Arts Practice I [EDUC 11041]
This module provides participants with the opportunity to develop and explore their own visual arts practice against the ‘real world’ contexts of contemporary art. Participants will be encouraged to work in a self-directed, critical manner, both independently and/or as part of a team collaborating on artwork with others. The programme provides an opportunity to develop and explore traditional art practices such as drawing, painting and sculpture as well as a range of other practices including public art, performance, film based media, video installation and other forms of digital art making. In addition the programme will encourage transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity such as hybrid practices incorporating art-making, writing and curating.
The module offers the chance for a sustained and serious re-evaluation of ones existing art practice within a critical and supportive environment. At the beginning of the course a face to face key note lecture will be given using one of the partnership galleries seminar spaces. This key note address will outline to participants the learning outcomes for the course and explain fully the University’s expectations for participants of the course. Built into the programme too will be the necessary platforms for debate both virtual and otherwise on ideas of practice and participants will be required to maintain a reflective journal throughout the course. Work created during the course will be brought together on two occasions through virtual and/or physical exhibitions and supported with e-seminars involving critical reflection and debate. Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Critical Contexts I [EDUC 11042]
This module will engage participants in contextualising their own art practice through integrating work done during Visual Arts Practice I with academic study in the fields of aesthetics and critical theory. A range of thematic areas will be identified and examined in relation to the latter to enable participants to help articulate and document the theory that informs their practice and apply these understandings to their academic written assignment. The work and contexts of artists, curators and galleriests will be drawn upon to aid the research process and opportunities created to interrogate participants’ findings through e-seminars and face to face workshops in galleries and/or other contexts. Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Critical Pedagogy I [EDUC 11043]
In light of current curricular changes in schools in Scotland, the wider UK and elsewhere, this module will build on the previous two modules and focus on developing a critical approach to art pedagogy and curriculum design. It will critically examine and evaluate models of art education and art pedagogy in historical and contemporary contexts and encourage participants to question and challenge domination and the beliefs that dominate our schools today. Critical Pedagogy I will familiarise participants with the key theorists in the field of critical pedagogy and will advance participants thinking on learning how to learn in art and help develop their critical consciousness as teachers of art.
Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Visual Arts Practice II [EDUC 11044]
This module provides participants with the opportunity to further develop and sustain their own visual arts practice against the contexts of particular contemporary art practices and concepts. Participants will be encouraged to work in a self-directed, highly critical manner, both independently and/or as part of a team collaborating on artwork with others. The programme will provide an opportunity to further develop and enhance their visual arts practice[s] beyond that achieved in Visual Arts Practice I.
In addition the programme will encourage creativity through transdisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity within a critical and supportive environment. Participants will need to be actively maintaining their reflective diary throughout the course and participate in debates, e-seminars both virtual and otherwise organised by the lead tutor. Work created during the course will again be brought together on two occasions through virtual and physical exhibitions and supported with e-seminars involving critical reflection and debate.
Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Critical Contexts II [EDUC 11045]
This module will engage participants in further contextualising their own art practice through integrating previous practical and academic work with further academic study in the fields of aesthetics and critical theory. Increased levels of sophistication and circumspection in the handling of critical and conceptual ideas will be required for this module. A further range of thematic areas will be carefully identified and examined in depth to enable participants to further refine and document clearly the theory that informs their art practice and apply these understandings to their academic written assignment. The work and contexts of artists, curators and galleriests will be further drawn upon to aid the research process and opportunities created to interrogate participants’ findings through e-seminars and face-to-face workshops in galleries and/or other contexts. Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Critical Pedagogy II [EDUC 11046]
This module will build upon Critical Pedagogy I and focus on developing an approach to art pedagogy and curriculum design that is both original and informed. You will have read widely in the area of Critical Pedagogy and be able to examine and evaluate literature in art education within a critical historical and contemporary context and develop opinions that are both innovative and sustainable to participants’ own pedagogical and curriculum development.
Participants are encouraged to continue to question and challenge domination and the beliefs that dominate our schools today in a robust way. Critical Pedagogy II will advance participants thinking on learning how to learn in art and enhance further their critical consciousness as a teacher and curriculum designer of visual arts education and creativity. Research methods appropriate to the participants study needs will be indentified, and any necessary training and support will be provided by the course tutor.
Artist Teacher Dissertation and Exhibition [EDUC 11047]
The Artist Teacher Dissertation module will bring together the various accounts and relationships that have been made between teaching and learning and art making over the course of previous modules. It will develop further to Masters level the relationship between art making and pedagogy through continued interrogation of the existing orders of art education in the form of curricula vis-a-vis identifying and evaluating educational concepts and issues related to art education including creativity, curriculum development and ideas of cross, inter and trans disciplinarity and demonstrating an advanced ability to argue alternative views, contextualise and critically reflect upon relevant knowledge, research and practice. Along side the research informed written dissertation based on small scale research, participants will be required to maintain a visual arts research portfolio [weighted 30%], which will be considered in parallel with the dissertation study and presented in the form of a virtual exhibition.
