Students at University of the West of Scotland are offered the opportunity to sample life abroad as part of their studies.

There are a number of steps that should be followed by students when planning to study abroad.

Step 1

Discuss your intention of studying abroad with your academic tutor and the Study Abroad Coordinator.  This will allow you to determine which countries and institutions may be suitable for your course of study.

It is critical that you make contact with the Study Abroad Coordinator at least 6 months prior to your anticipated departure.  This allows sufficient time for all arrangements to be made.

Step 2

It is important that you look at the websites of the institutions you are interested in studying at to ascertain their suitability from your point of view.

In particular they are a valuable source of information on issues such as accommodation, module choice and general day-to-day living.

Step 3

Once you have decided on your preferred institution, the Study Abroad Coordinator will contact their International Office to make them aware of your interest.  Normally they will advise on the application process, accommodation and modular issues.  Certain institutions have on-line application processes with very strict guidelines.  It is critical that you adhere to them.

You should be aware that entry to the USA normally requires a visa and application must be made at least 4 months in advance.  The US partner institution assists in the process of making visa application.

Step 4

The basic principle of studying abroad is that you undertake modules that are, are near as possible, similiar to those you would have studied at UWS.

It is important, therefore that you liaise with your academic tutor so that a suitable suite of modules are chosen at your preferred institution.

Step 5

By this point, your preferred institution will be providing you with relevant information and may require further information from you.  It is absolutely essential that you respond to them immediately, copying all correspondence to the Study Abroad Coordinator.

Step 6

Prior to departure you must make an appointment with the Study Abroad Coordinator to finalise any outstanding issues.
