Culture

Scottish people are known for their friendly and warm nature; the University of the West of Scotland encapsulates these qualities. Our campuses are relaxed and culturally diverse environments, contributed to by our international students who originate from over 60 countries.

The following cultural tips should assist you with adjusting to life in Britain so that your time here is a successful and happy experience.

Cultural Diversity

Since Britain has a mix of different cultures, religions and ethnic groups, it is important that you respect individual beliefs and lifestyles. Within Britain, men and women share equal status.

Politeness

Politeness in Britain is regarded very highly and people will say please and thank you when asking or receiving information and purchases.

Greeting

In Britain, people usually introduce themselves with a handshake. It is usually acceptable to call people by their first name unless informed differently. If you are unsure then call them by their title: Mr, Miss, Mrs, Dr.

Queuing

British people queue for everything, whether it is in a supermarket, in a bank, or waiting for public transport. It is considered rude if you try to push to the front of the queue.

Punctuality

When you have a meeting or an appointment to attend, it is advisable that you arrive on time. If you are unable to attend, where possible, it is considered polite to notify the person you had arranged to meet in advance of the meeting time. At the University, your lectures and tutorials will begin on time and a class register is taken, so your absence will be noted by the class tutor.
