Scotland's biggest modern university

The University is currently seeking approval to change name to University of the West of Scotland. We anticipate a decision on the name change later this year.

Research

The Centre for Academic and Professional Development initiates, participates and leads a growing range of projects and research activities in support of the enhancement of learning and teaching.

Currently staff are engaged in work in relation to:

  • Curriculum design and assessment practice
  • Embedding effective learning skills into the curriculum
  • Learning technologies and eLearning
  • Personal Development Planning and ePortfolios

In particular, the Centre promotes activities which underpin the University’s Learning & Teaching Strategy and eLearning Strategy, and engages staff from across the University with various partners in Further & Higher Education across the Scotland, the UK and internationally.

Current projects include:

Specifying an e-portfolio: Enhanced learner information for flexible admissions and transitions into Higher Education

This is a JISC funded project lead exploring the development of enhanced learning information to informed admission and transition into Higher Education, drawing together personal development planning processes in school, further education and higher education. Involving collaboration between the Universities of Nottingham (lead), Leeds, Paisley and the University Central Admissions Service, the project forms part of the JISC MLEs for Lifelong Learning Programme.

Individualised Support for Learners through ePorfolios (ISLE Project)

Currently under development but given provisional support by the Joint Scottish Funding Councils, this project seeks to develop enhanced student progression, retention and achievement through an electronically supported process of personal development planning in further and higher education. This ePortfolio project has been developed under the eLearning Transformational Projects initiative, and will make major contribution to the development of an ePortfolio supported PDP system at the University and enhance relationships between the University and its FE partners. As well as us, who lead the Project, it also involves institutions from across Scotland, including the University of Abertay, Dundee, Queen Margaret University College, Ayr College, James Watt College, Dumfries & Galloway College, Motherwell College, Fife & Glenrothes Colleges, and Angus College.
