Corporate Homicide

Ms Carolynn Gray and Professor Angus McAllister

carolynn.gray@uws.ac.uk / angus.mcallister@uws.ac.uk

The project concerns an important legal issue of criminal law, which also has implications in relation to company law and health and safety law.

It will look at the nature of corporate homicide (corporate manslaughter in England), including issues of corporate fault and vicarious liability of company officials. It will focus particularly on the changes introduced by the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which makes it easier to prosecute companies for corporate homicide, independently of any criminal liability of an individual company official or officials.

The project will build upon the existing experience and research interests of the law group. The group has a small postgraduate community and an excellent support network for both new and experienced researchers. The successful candidate will also be given the opportunity to participate in the teaching of undergraduate law modules.

The supervisory team

Carolynn Gray teaches Criminal Law and has undertaken extensive research in socio-legal areas. Angus McAllister has a personal chair in law, has published extensively in relation to property law and delict, and holds a PhD in law. Both supervisors have submitted work for RAE 2008.

It is anticipated that the supervisory team may be supplemented by an additional supervisor from another institution.
