Quick Scan Tool for Strategic Capacity Management
Dr Rob Dekkers
rob.dekkers@uws.ac.uk
This project aims to develop a Quick Scan Tool for industrial companies to assess their performance levels and to indicate areas of improvement. Currently, a number of institutions, e.g. the Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Services and Scottish Enterprise, direct their efforts to improve the productivity in Scottish companies. However, their scans and support are not yet based on theoretical underpinning or at a comprehensive method for addressing a variety of manufacturing and operations issues. The concept of Strategic Capacity Management provides the possibility of a theoretical underpinning; so far, Strategic Capacity Management concept consists of separate methods for separate issues. The project will provide the opportunity to integrate these concepts into one Scanning Tool.
The scope of concepts for Strategic Capacity Management is based on earlier publications. The concepts to be integrated, include:
Manufacturing strategy
Organisational design for operations
Outsourcing decisions
Manufacturing technology
Order Entry Points
Control capability (covers ICT applications)
Industrial networks
The project will require close collaboration with possible users of the scan for both the development and the validation of the tool. This doctoral study will contribute to the closing of the productivity and innovation gap of the Scottish economy.
