Institute of Healthcare Associated Infection

  • The Institute of Healthcare Associated Infection, University of the West of Scotland, is pleased to be able to offer a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) Improvement, a 60 credit, SCQF level 11 programme, available from September 2014. The programme is designed for health and social care professionals working to generate HAI improvement at (or supported at) a senior practitioner/middle management level or academics from healthcare related disciplines. Delivered on a part time basis through the Moodle online platform, this programme offers flexibility in when and how students study. Click here and download flyer for further information.

A partnership approach to reducing the occurrence and burden of HAI through:

    • research and knowledge transfer activity
    • development of niche academic programmes
    • multi-disciplinary collaboration between education, NHS and industry
    • proof of policy to practice effectiveness

    Research Focus

    The key focus areas are:

    • The Patient Journey – optimising the management of patients through the hospital, to ensure that the prevalence of HAIs is reduced - for example, measures to minimise impact of isolation on patients with reduced mental capacity.
    • The Patient Environment – investigating how the healthcare environment contributes to the spread of HAIS - for example, reducing patient harm and resource burden from hospital outbreaks of norovirus.
    • Understanding HAIs – using information about their biology to predict or prevent HAIs - for example, constructing cost effective testing to optimise patient pathways.
