University Leads International Research Collaboration to Study Child Health in Malawi

The University is heading up an international university collaboration to study the problems of food production and nutrient deficiency in mothers and children from Malawi in southern Africa .

This £123,000 pilot project, which is funded by the UK government's Joint Environment and Human Health Programme, will see researchers from the University 's School of Health , Nursing & Midwifery, School of Social Sciences and School of Engineering & Science joining forces with statisticians from the University of Strathclyde and soil scientists from University of Duisburg-Essen , Germany .

University Playing Key Role in £6 Million Research Development Project

ITI Energy has invested in a new interior surface coating technology that will for the first time, allow an ultra-smooth, hard, diamond-like carbon film to be applied to the internal surfaces of a range of components in many industries, including oil and gas. The Thin Film Centre (TFC) at Paisley has been awarded a two year Contract Research Agreement with California based Sub-One Technology Inc.

Professor Frank Placido, Director of the TFC will lead a small team to increase the understanding of the fundamental process, its areas of application, test performance levels and to scale the process up to enable the coating of larger parts.

Sub-One have installed a prototype / test facility in the TFC. The equipment can apply coatings to a wide range of base materials with the specifications easily tailored to meet specific application requirements, providing hardness, temperature resistance, wear resistance and corrosion and erosion resistance.

Microscale Sensors Connect R&D to Industry

Since the Microscale Sensors (MSS) Group began in 2001, they have benefited from £2.5m of funding to recruit a strong cohort of R&D staff and PhD students and to establish well-equipped research labs.

Following a growth in commercial research and consultancy work, the MSS Group identified an increasing requirement from companies to access their specific technical know how in relation to Microscale Sensors technology and access to the specialised laboratories at the University. This presented an opportunity to generate income and expand Microscale Sensors' interaction with companies and other external organisations. Read more....

School of engineering and science wins two major accolades

Two lecturers from the University's School of Engineering and Science, working in partnership with Breval Technical Services from Hillington in Glasgow won a Scottish award and then went on to win a UK-wide prize.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is Europe's leading programme helping businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills.

Lecturers David Kennedy and Kenny Cameron won the 'Knowledge Transfer Partnership Scotland Award' and then went on to win its 'Best Engineering Excellence Award' which was sponsored by the Royal Academy for Engineering at a ceremony held in London. Breval Technical Services has developed a product called 'The Wizard' which cleans and coats dirty and contaminated ventilation systems in buildings.
