Acceptable Use Policy

Computing Facilities

Use of the computer equipment on this campus is governed by the University Acceptable Use Policy. The University of the West of Scotland reserves the right to investigate computer activity that is reasonably suspected to be detrimental to any person, server or network or to be in breach of this policy.

By using the computer equipment you signify acceptance of the policy and of the consequences of inappropriate use.

  1. Smoking or the consumption of food or drinks is not permitted in the laboratories. You must not take food or drink into the laboratory.  You must not smoke in the laboratory .
  2. You must not tamper, adjust, switch on/off or otherwise interfere with any computer equipment in the laboratories.
  3. You must not use or install any software that is not provided by the University.  Use of software written or developed by you as part of academic activities is permitted in Departmental facilities subject to compliance with all other rules. You must not use pirated software or illegally use licensed software in the laboratory.
  4. You must not intentionally introduce any virus or other nuisance program or file onto any system. You must not modify the precautions taken by the University to prevent such infection.
  5. You must not use the facilities for monetary gain or in a wasteful manner (e.g. play games).  You must not prevent others from making legitimate, course related use of the facilities.
  6. You must not use or attempt to use any username, identification code or computer resources other than those allocated to you.
  7. You must not try to gain unauthorised entry to other computer systems or files ('hacking') from the laboratory.
  8. 8. You must not copy, delete or make changes to any files, directories or folders other than your own, except for course material provided for your use, or in connection with approved group projects.
  9. You must never leave a computer while you are logged in. You must always log out before leaving the room.
  10. You must not use the University Data Network to create, access or transmit material of an offensive, obscene or indecent nature, or any data capable of being resolved into an offensive or obscene form.
  11. You must not create or transmit material which is designed or likely to cause annoyance, inconvenience, needless anxiety or defamation.
  12. You must not use data of a personal nature which contravenes the Data Protection Act. You must not hold on the University Data Network any personal data not related to your academic studies. The use of personal data must be registered with the UK Data Protection Registrar. This can be done via the University Registrar who is the University Data Protection Officer.
  13. Access may be restricted to the laboratories as part of a maintenance schedule. You must vacate the laboratory when requested to do so by a member of staff.
  14. You must comply with the JANET Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) as published by the United Kingdom Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA). The JANET AUP can be viewed at http://www .ja.net/documents/use.html.

The breaking of any of the above Rules could mean a withdrawal of facilities from you and result in disciplinary action. Please see University Regulation No 12 -'Code of Discipline for Students'.
