Laurence Giraud-Johnstone, graduated in English Language and  Literature at the University of Jean Monnet, Saint-Etienne (France) and did the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the former Saint Andrews College of Education, Glasgow. Taught French at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan (Canada), The University of Strathclyde, Continuing Education Department at the University of Glasgow and at the Alliance Française in Glasgow before setting up the Languages section at the former Department of Accounting, Economics and Languages at the University of the West of Scotland in 1990. She is the year abroad coordinator for languages on behalf of the School of Creative and Cultural Industries and the programme organiser of visiting scholars from France who have given in-depth,  first-hand, up-to-date, vocationally appropriate lectures and with whom research links and scholarship activities are established.

Her main research interests are in the cultural , social, political, economical and environnemental issues in contemporary France but also improving students as lifelong learners and pedagogical aspects of language learning and teaching. She has also been working on political landscape and social issues in Contemporary France via the implementation of PDP. Her most recent  publication dealt with the use of  non-language specialist Socrates visiting scholars to lecture about social discontent in France in the target language to enhance student learning experience. She is currently investigating workbased learning abroad in a foreign language.

From 2001 up till now Laurence is writing and editing of up-to-date curricular materials on a wide range of economic, political, environmental and social issues in collaboration with Socrates partners with the cooperation of CAPD.

  • Workshop on work based learning Abroad in a Foreign Language module delivered for British Council, Edinburgh, 18th of May 2010.
  • Forthcoming academic paper on findings on Workbased learning Abroad in a Foreign Language pilot project.
