International Integration and the Structure of Exports in Central Asian Republics

Eurasian Geography and Economics, 2008, 49, No. 5, pp. 604–622.

Two European political economists examine the restructuring of external relations of the Central Asian republics (CARs) after the disintegration of the Soviet Union by focusing on the structures of exports based on evidence provided by past balances of payments and trade data disaggregated at a relatively high level. The authors’ investigation identifies shifts in the commodity composition of exports since the CARs’ independence, both in terms of the share of major commodity groupings (e.g., toward raw materials) and in the quality/valueadded of goods within specific commodity groups, as well as the spatial pattern of export destinations. The paper also addresses differences in the CARs’ trade performance during the
post-Soviet period, which remain small despite the substantial differences in resource endowments and policy orientations.

Martin Myant and Simon Smith
European Studies Occasional Paper - EU Accession, Regional Policy, Social and Economic Development in East Central Europe

This publication, a collection of papers originally presented at a UACES sponsored workshop held at the University in May 2003, brings together a variety of perspectives focussing mainly on Czech and Slovak experience of developing regional development initiatives in connection with EU accession. It is edited by Dr Simon Smith and Professor Martin Myant of the Business School, themselves two of the UK's leading experts on Czech and Slovak society and economy. One of the important aspects of the paper is that it allows access to the thinking of colleagues from both Czech and Slovak Republics on selected regional development issues embedded in a framework of EU accession issues carefully described and discussed by UK based experts.

Ewa Balcerowicz, Iraj Hashi, Jens Lowitzsch and Miklos Szanyi European Studies Occasional Paper - The Development of Insolvency Procedures in Transition Economies: A Comparative Analysis

This paper, by a distinguished collective of specialists from across Europe, provides a summary of the evolution and state of play in developing insolvency/bankruptcy mechanisms across a range of transformation economies. Its authors describe the development of a key market economy institutional mechanism both elegantly and concisely, making an important contribution to the literature.

George Blazyca
European Studies Occasional Paper - Poland on the eve of EU membership

This second publication in our new Occasional Papers series in European Studies provides a snapshot of Poland and EU enlargement issues from the perspective of a distinguished panel brought together in Edinburgh in November 2002 by the Consul-General in Scotland of the Polish Republic, Mr Wojciech Tycinski. The paper, assembled by Professor George Blazyca, begins with an editor's overview, followed by words of welcome from George Reid MSP, deputy presiding officer in the Scottish Parliament. Substantive contributions cover economic, political, geopolitical and sociological aspects as Poland readies itself for EU entry.

The team of authors includes: Dr Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, former president of the National Bank of Poland; Professor Ireneusz Krzeminski a leading sociologist from the Polish Academy of Sciences; Dr Rick Fawn, an international relations expert from St Andrews University; Dr Clare McManus-Czubinska, an expert on Polish politics from Glasgow University; and the artist, Professor Richard Demarco from Edinburgh. It is a uniquely informative collection at a critical moment in Poland's post communist transformation.
