B.ED. (Hons)
B.Ed. School Experience Arrangements
There are periods of school experience throughout the course, providing placements at all levels within the age range 3 to 12 years. The Year 1 placement is not formally assessed. All the other placements are assessed by the school and University tutors.
Year 1: this is a "whole school" placement, which consists of eight individual serial days, followed by two weeks. The serial days are to enable students to begin to experience classes at all stages of the school. The two weeks will normally be a P4/5 stage.
Year 2: this is a six week placement with two weeks before Easter, followed by four weeks after Easter in the same P4/5 class.
Year 3: this is a three week placement in a Pre-school class, then a four week placement in a P1-3 class.
Year 4: this is a ten week placement in a P6/7 class.
Assessment
Assessment of the students' teaching in schools is based on a system of report forms involving characteristics (Benchmarks) related to the National Professional Profile which is completed for all students at the successful completion of their course. The National Profile assessment system of Satisfactory and Unsatisfactory grades is used.
Reports
Similar forms are used by both University staff and teachers in schools to assess student performance. The school report form can be downloaded from the links below.
The same report form is used for all years on the BEd course. The file below can either be printed off and competed by hand or downloaded and completed electronically.
