Professor Henry Maitles

Background

Henry Maitles is Professor in Education (Learning and Teaching). He researches and teaches in the area of citizenship and values and in particular the impact of citizenship initiatives in the schools. He was a member of the Scottish Executive Review Group which drew up the proposals for Education for Citizenship which is a policy priority in all Scottish schools. He is on the editorial boards of Educational Review, Genocide Studies and Prevention and Journalfor Critical Education Policy Studies

teaching interests

Henry Maitles teaches aspects of Education for Citizenship and active and integrated learning in the social sciences on the PGDE(S), PGDE(P) and B.Ed courses. He supervises Chartered Teacher, Masters and Doctoral students.

research interests

Henry Maitles has researched into the impact of curricular initiatives on pupils' citizenship values in terms of the development of professional practice. He also researches into the Holocaust and his third area is the impact of deprivation on school attainment in terms of equity and social justice.
