Effective Teaching for Effective Learning

Chartered Teacher Programme: Module 2, Learning and Teaching

This is a core module at postgraduate certificate level on the Chartered Teacher pathway.

The module, which is made up of a number of small online discussions based around set readings is delivered using a 50/50 delivery approach whereby learners are likely to spend 50% of the module online and 50% of the time undertaking independent study.

Learning Outcomes

  • Critically review a range of academic writing on the factors influencing effective teaching an effective learning;
  • Reflectively self-evaluate aspects of personal teaching in terms of general factors making for effectiveness;
  • Design, implement and evaluate an innovation in personal teaching intended to increase effectiveness

Indicative Content

  • What is effective teaching and effective learning?
  • What are the factors which encourage effective teaching and learning?
  • What theories underpin various approaches to teaching and to learning?
  • How do we reflect on our own classroom performance?
  • What goes into designing, implementing and evaluating a teaching and learning innovation?

After considering these various point, participants will individually develop their own innovation, sharing their insights with fellow course members who will provide critical feedback along the way. Thought will also be given as to how the innovation's effects will be evaluated.

Each participant will have the opportunity to show how the module has developed the effectiveness of their teaching, the effectiveness of their pupils' learning and their own capacity for being a reflective practitioner.
