CPD/Chartered Teacher

Masters Dissertation

The dissertation is the final stage of the Advanced Professional Studies (Chartered Teacher Pathway).

For students undertaking the Chartered Teacher Pathway, the M.Ed project will involve the submission of a dissertation which combines research and theoretical perspectives within the context of professional practice.

A student can only achieve the M.Ed. in Advanced Professional Studies (Chartered Teacher Pathway) if they have already completed the equivalent named Post Graduate Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Studies (Chartered Teacher Pathway).

Overview

There are two options available at this level:

  • A single dissertation/work-related project equivalent to 4 modules worth of academic credit . This option results in a period of study/research conducted over 1 academic session.
  • Undertake 2 smaller work-related projects each one of which is equivalent to 2 modules worth of academic credit . This option results in a period of study/research conducted over 2 academic sessions.

During Trimester 1, the process of developing the dissertation/work-related project is structured around a number of key areas, each of which introduces a number of related and inter-related themes associated with conducting research in educational contexts. Trimester 2 is largely taken up with the implementation of the individual’s research plan, revising their review of literature and preparing the dissertation/work-related project for submission. A number of formative tasks are discussed online with peers and submitted to a designated supervisor for feedback and guidance at related points.

Word Count

Option (i): Single dissertation
The format of the single research report is likely to be the same as for the smaller work related projects but will be of an appropriate depth and breadth and in the region of 15,000 to 18,000 words (excluding illustrations, bibliography and appendices). Details will be negotiated with a designated research supervisor.

Option (ii): 2 x Work-related projects
The two smaller work-related projects are likely to be in the region of 7,500 and 9,000 words each (excluding illustrations, bibliography and appendices). In some circumstances the report(s) may be shorter and accompanied by other forms of evidence of learning e.g. a computer program. The precise length of the dissertation may vary with subject area and chosen topic. Details must again be negotiated with a designated research supervisor.

Note: We have considerable experience of facilitating the development and submission of Masters level dissertations across a number of disciplines however we are also mindful that students need to both come to terms with the dissertation requirements at Masters level and to engage with the process in a manageable and meaningful way.  For this reason we would suggest the 2 smaller work-related project option as being most suitable for those relatively new to the field of educational research. In other words it is likely to be the most appropriate option in terms of workload, academic and professional engagement.
