Being a student can be a very demanding experience. You will be required to become an independent learner and develop new academic skills. The Effective Learning Team, working within the Centre for Academic and Professional Development, provides personal advice and online resources to help you to develop and enhance the academic skills you will need during your time at University.  We are committed to providing guidance to meet the specific learning needs of all students.  

Whether you're an undergraduate or postgraduate, studying full-time or part-time, have come to University straight from school or college, or haven't been inside a classroom for years, Effective Learning Tutors are available to help you. They understand the demands of university study and will assist you in identifying the academic skills you need to develop and enhance.  Effective Learning Tutors offer assistance on a range of topics including:

  • Essays, reports and dissertations
  • Referencing and avoiding plagiarism
  • Critical thinking
  • Presentation skills
  • Studying and exam techniques
  • Personal development planning
  • Time management

You can contact an Effective Learning Tutor for help and advice, and tutors may also provide academic skills development delivered as an integral part of your module.
