Tackling issues in WASTE & POLLUTION MANAGEMENT, CLIMATE CHANGE and HUMAN HEALTH

  • Identifying, Quantifying and Understanding
  • Simulating and Forecasting
  • Supporting Decisions and Informing Policy

Our research applies multidisciplinary earth and environmental science skills at the Interface of SOCIAL SCIENCE and ENGINEERING.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND HYDROLOGICAL SYSTEMS

We assess the environmental, social, and human health impacts of climate change with particular reference to developing community-level adaptation strategies. We apply seasonal climate forecasts to public health assessments. Specific research is also undertaken on climate change, flooding and the urban water environment.

pollutant transport and fate

toxic waste signboardWe specialise in laboratory and field scale investigations of contaminated soils and sediments and industrial wastes, identifying contaminants, understanding their mobility, developing sampling protocols, risk assessments and remediation technologies.

resource and waste management

Collecting recycled newspaperOur research centres on:
(i) explaining householders' behaviours in reducing, reusing and recycling household waste...and how their performances can be improved;
(ii) investigating product lifecycles, particular attention being given to the newspaper lifecycle.

environment and human health

We are particularly concerned with sources and pathways of human exposure to pollutants and the impacts on human health.

Construction, Geomaterials & Cultural Heritage

Our research into construction & the environment includes support for the conservation and restoration of our built heritage and the use of geomaterials and waste materials in construction. We are a centre of excellence for the properties of self compacting concretes, advanced cementitious composites and nanotechnology in construction. We also maintain general research interests across the earth sciences.

cross cutting research

The theme of decision support and knowledge transfer cuts across all our research. We are particularly involved in the development and application of environmental models, scenario mdelling and societal simulation.Schenmatic of interactions between human activity and the environmentOur Interlinking Research into Human Activity and the Environment
