Physics at UWS
Welcome to Dr. Gregory Morozov
Wednesday 10 June, 2009 1:13 AM

We were recently joined by another new member of staff in Physics at UWS: Dr. Gregory Morozov . Gregory joined us as a Research Fellow in May 2009 and will make valuable contributions to teaching and research. He studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology before carrying out his PhD at Windsor University in Canada. Prior to his arrival at UWS, he was working as a Research Associate at the University of Bristol.
AGATA: the world's most powerful gamma-ray spectrometer
Monday 23 February, 2009 5:20 PM
Researchers from the UWS nuclear
physics research group have recently
been awarded a research grant from
the Science and Technology Facilities
Council (STFC) to contribute towards
the construction of AGATA - the
Advanced Gamma Tracking Array.
Dr. John F. Smith and Professor
Robert Chapman have been awarded
a four-year research grant to help
commission and set up the array and
to carry out simulations of its
performance.
The AGATA spectrometer is presently being developed by a collaboration of over 40 instiitutions from 12 European countries.
In the UK, UWS will collaborate with the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester, York, Surrey and the STFC Daresbury Laboratory.
Dr. Smith with manage the UK involvement in all of the initial experiments. The AGATA spectrometer will detect gamma rays emitted following nuclear reactions with unprecedented
sensitivity, leading to a new understanding of the structure
of atomic nuclei and new nuclear-structure phenomena.
Welcome to Dr. Samuel Atarah
Wednesday 11 February, 2009 10:50 PM

We are pleased to announce the arrival of a new member of staff in Physics at UWS: Dr. Samuel Atarah. Sam joined us as a Research Fellow in January 2009 and is already up and running, teaching two of our physics modules. He studied at the University of Helsinki before carrying out his PhD at DeMontfort in Leicester. Prior to joining UWS Sam was working at the University of Leicester. His area of research is thin films and he will be an active member of the UWS Thin Films Centre.
Communicating Physics Competition: the Large Hadron Collider
Wednesday 15 October, 2008 1:50 PM
Together with the Institute of Physics in Scotland, we are organizing
a competition for physics students schools across Scotland entitled "Communicating Physics". To take part in the competition, you need to submit a piece of work about the Large Hadron Collider. For more details click on this link: Communicating Physics competition.
