Research

There are a number of active research groups and research centres within physics at UWS.

The primary research groups in physics are listed below. Clicking on each member of the list will provide a brief summary about the research activity of that group. However, most of the research groups have more detailed web-pages which are linked from the summary pages.

Experimental Nuclear Physics Research Group

Microscale Sensors Group

Thin Film Research Group

Our research is truly international in scope. Most of the research within the nuclear-physics research group is carried out at overseas laboratories such as CERN (Geneva), JYFL (Finland), Legnaro (Italy) and Argonne (USA). Our teams of researchers are also international: presently we have PDRAs from all over the world.

Our research is funded by various sources including research councils and industry. The nuclear-physics group was recently awarded a ~£400k research grant from the STFC to contribute towards the construction of AGATA. AGATA is a innovative new gamma-ray tracking spectometer presently being developed by a collaboration of over 40 institutions in 12 European countries.

All of our research groups support the supervision of PhD studentships which are funded mainly by the Research Councils (STFC, EPSRC), by SUPA, and by the university. Vacancies arise every year for such studentships and places are offered to candidates with degrees in physics and related subject areas..
