Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard)

The University offers new opportunities for independent learners to gain full advantage of peer discussion and specialist tutor support within a flexible and easily accessible study environment. This study environment is called Blackboard and it is the leading commercial Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Blackboard provides a collection of communication tools to enhance the learning experience and provide high levels of direct support to learners. All students can maintain contact with tutors and other members of student groups. Access to Blackboard is designed to be straightforward for all users and its use will become second nature to you.

Blackboard supports:

  • Electronic mail (e-mail)
  • Live chat facilities
  • Classroom forums
  • Wikis, blogs podcasts and much more
Blackboard and your Computer

In order to access Blackboard you need a computer which is connected to the Internet. A broadband connection is preferable but not essential.

Any modern computer should have no issues in accessing Blackboard and should have sufficient memory and storage space to meet your requirements. If you regularly access the Internet and watch video clips on YouTube or BBC iPlayer then your computer is of a suitable specification for use with Blackboard.

As you will probably be doing a lot of reading on the computer you will find that a large screen makes reading easier (17” and above).

Printer

A printer is not essential but is recommended since hard copy of assignment work can be very helpful.

A low cost inkjet printer which is compatible with your equipment is adequate but you may wish to invest in a printer with a higher printing speed as you may need to print fairly large documents depending on your programme.
