Scottish Schools Essay Competition
The Competition was founded in 1991 as a joint venture between the University of Paisley Library and John Smith & Son Bookshops Ltd. Organised by the University Library and sponsored by John Smiths, the competition is open to any pupil studying at a Scottish secondary school. It aims to encourage reading and writing among school pupils and has become established as a significant annual event: out of large numbers of entries received, all to a uniformly high standard, prizes have been awarded to some outstanding pieces of writing by pupils across the whole secondary school age range, and from schools the length and breadth of Scotland. Each year a topic is set by the organisers, but competitors are allowed considerable freedom in their approach to each subject. The fascinating results may be appreciated by reading the range of prize-winning entries on the following screens.
