Broadcast Production
YEAR 1 course content
The first year of the programme introduces the main arenas of performance delivery, television and the visual, radio and the auditory, and online.
Television and the visual is presented within Television Production 1a and 1b, and through Digital Photography 1. Students interested in producing filmed work will write, produce and post-produce both drama and documentary films, and will also have the opportunity to learn new media post-production techniques.
Radio and the auditory is presented through Introduction to Radio. Production for radio broadcasting is taught, introducing students to sound recording and multi-track editing, and the production of radio drama, radio documentary and news.
The online is presented within each of the previous modules, and is presented as a delivery mechanism for output. If you wish to pursue this in further depth you may choose, as an option, Digital Media 1, which considers design aspects of online delivery, with reference principally through text, at this level.
This year introduces students to key concepts in broadcasting production and theory, and to the structure and processes of the UK media industry. Critical studies of media output will be presented within the production-oriented modules, and in the Programming strand, within the core module Factual Broadcasting, as well as the optional module Programming: Sport, Media, Culture.
You will also be able to choose, as an optional module, a modern language (French, German or Spanish).
FILM & TELEVISION PRODUCTION a: The television industry continues to dominate British cultural life, financing the best of UK movies, documentaries, comedy and drama series. This first module in the film and television production pathway introduces you to industry-practice methodology in pre-production, production and post-production processes. You will learn script development, script-breakdown, scheduling, budgeting, storyboarding, organising location access and legal permits and production team management. You will also begin to refine your camera, lighting, editing and recording skills.
DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY 1: This module complements the moving image pathway as you gain key skills and an understanding of the aesthetics involved in planning, framing and lighting images, as well as developing skills in digital manipulation and augmentation of your work.
INTRODUCTION TO RADIO: This first module introduces you to sound recording and editing, and the creative use of music and sound effects. You will also learn how to research and interview, constructing documentary and news programming for specified programming slots. You will also learn how to write, direct and produce drama.
FACTUAL BROADCASTING: This module aims to provide an introduction to the development of factual programming within the broadcasting industry. Students will be invited to engage with and analyse the different approaches to factual broadcasting, at both a local UK, and global perspective.
FILM & TELEVISION PRODUCTION b: In this second film and television production module you will be able apply increasingly creative approaches to your film-production technique. The module offers an enjoyable and challenging mix of drama and documentary approaches, as you hone your creative film-making skills.
SPORT, MEDIA & SOCIETY: The module will address the means by which society both mediates and consumes sport. Students will explore a range of broadcast sport output and critically examine how the producers create a sense of event for the audience. Students will also examine the economic imperatives for sport governing bodies and broadcasters.
