DIGITAL ART STUDENT NOMINATED FOR BAFTA NEW TALENT AWARD

06 January 2009

Third year digital art student Steven Sherlock has been nominated for a BAFTA New Talent Award in the multimedia category for "The Dark Rooms". His work is listed here.

Steven describes his work ‘The Dark Rooms’ (2008/9) as an exploration of "the use of collage to create an animated sequence incorporating hybrid creatures/imaginary landscapes. The concept developed as an exploration into the dark rooms of the mind in a state of sleep - the absurd stage that delivers hybrid creatures in an environment borne from memory and imagination. To this end, each scene represents a dream state that has dark undertones with the disjointed figures, and nonsensical compositions reflective of the nature of turbulent, fragmented dreaming. Masked hybrids are used throughout the visuals as a means of representing the personalities/facades that the ‘self’ and others use as a means of expression. Re-appropriated photographs and imagery were used to give new meaning to graphic content, while audio was used to add atmosphere to related content. The project was authored using Flash software, together with Illustrator, Photoshop and Final Cut to produce graphics/edit sound files."

Lecturer in the School Alison Clifford said "I am delighted that Steven has been nominated for such a prestigious award. His work reflects the imaginative and creative ways in which our students work with digital media."
