UWS ACADEMIC APPEARS ON BBC RADIO 4 START THE WEEK WITH ANDREW MARR

15 December 2008

Dr Andy Miah, a Reader in the School of Creative and Cultural industries at UWS appeared on the BBC's flagship Radio 4 programme Start the Week with Andrew Marr to talk about his new book, Human Futures: Art in an Age of Uncertainty. The programme currently boasts 2 million listeners and Dr Miah's book emerges from a Fellowship he hold at FACT, the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology in Liverpool, the UK's leading media art institution.

Dr Miah said "To appear on the programme was worth travelling the 1000 miles or so from Switzerland. Andrew Marr is one of our sharpest broadcasters and is clearly marked out as a long-term anchor for the BBC. Coming from a Media school, taking part in such programmes has much more value than just promoting a new publication. It is about participating in our contemporary media culture.

The book Human Futures is a remarkably ambitious text, involving numerous institutions and commited artists, writers and thinkers. We went from start to finish in 6 months, which demonstrates the dedication of all those involved and the work should reflect the cutting edge of ideas about the future because of this. It aims to provide a democratized space through which to imagine the fu ure and locating this within the media through programmes like Start the Week is not just appealing, it is an obligation."

Dr Miah was also recently the focus of a 2-page profile piece in The Scotsman (28 November, 2008) and a Feature supplement in The Independent on contemporary visionaries.
