20 October 2008
University of the West of Scotland (UWS) students are playing a key role in the creation of a leading new television drama, ‘The Crews’.
10 UWS Performance students are involved in both in acting and production roles in the drama which is being billed as ‘The Scottish Sopranos’.
Glasgow production company Foghorn Entertainment are filming the pilot episode of ‘The Crews’ in Ayr and Glasgow over the next three months and recently shot scenes at the University’s Ayr Campus, with future filming planned at the Campus in November.
Written by Kolin Fergusson and Colin Ross Smith, ‘The Crews’ tells the story of a young female detective's attempts to bring her brother's killers to justice against the dramatic backdrop of Glasgow’s crime underworld.
Stuart Hepburn, who is a Lecturer in Scriptwriting and Performance at University of the West of Scotland and has written and acted in many popular TV programmes such as Taggart, Rebus and Monarch of the Glen, is playing the key role of the young female detective's hard pressed boss in the pilot.
It was through Stuart’s links with the production company that they filmed at the University’s Ayr Campus and UWS students had the opportunity to audition for acting and production roles.
Stuart commented: "Foghorn is a vibrant new company who are just the sort of people with whom our young performers and writers should be collaborating."
Third year UWS Performance student Gary Hogg added “It was fantastic to act with a professional company so early in my career. I can’t wait for the next Episode!”
