DR ANDY MIAH CHAIRS PANEL DEBATE AT THE 9TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON OLYMPIC RESEARCH IN BEIJING, DAYS BEFORE THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE OLYMPICS
8 August 2008
On the eve of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Dr Andy Miah, Reader in the School of MLM chaired an important panel debate about the role of new media and non-professional journalists at the Olympic Games. The event brought scholars from Canada, China and the UK to consider the impact of new journalistic communities on the running and management of the Olympic Games. Dr Miah's research is funded by the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland and continues his longitudinal research on the role of new media at the Olympics.
Dr Miah said: “This meeting brings together present and future Olympic cities of Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010 andLondon 2012. Each country is having to address the implications of increasing numbers of citizens who see themselves as reporters and who, by extension, claim rights to report. For London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 managing these communities will be critical to the success of the Games."
