Sound Advice

In an unprecedented show of unity, leading UK music industry organisations have joined forces to stage Sound Advice, the Music Industry Education Roadshow that aims to highlight career paths within the business. The School of Creative and Cultural industries at Paisley has unique access to this event through the involvement of Senior Lecturer in Commercial Music, Allan Dumbreck.

Oct 2002: Press Release: Live music is the lifeblood of the Music Industry

This is one of the key messages the Sound Advice Music Industry Roadshow is highlighting as it gears up for a week-long tour of UK universities and colleges.

Sound Advice represents a unique collaboration by all of the UK’s leading Music Industry organisations under an educational banner. Its aim is to provide music students around the country with invaluable advice from leading industry figures about issues affecting the industry and how these might impact on their future careers. The importance of Live music, the issues surrounding Copyright and the need for education within the industry will be high on the agenda.

Sound Advice, which runs from October 2125th, will visit London, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Nottingham. Each day will conclude with an evening gig at a local venue where attention will be focused on emerging talent. These gigs provide a platform for selected unsigned bands to showcase their music to members of the public and representatives from the music industry. One act at each venue has been chosen in conjunction with Radio 1 which, along with HMV, is sponsoring the Sound Advice tour.

A wide variety of local bands have been chosen to take part in the Live music events. In Glasgow, Dreampowder, RAAR, August 8 1 and Odeon Beat Club will be performing at King Tut’s, while in Liverpool the line-up for The Masque Theatre includes The Relatives and The Zutons. The Obsession, Bynatone and Falkland Yaks will play at The Life Café in Manchester and Cullan Keys, Dai Lo and The Pittstops will perform at The Rig in Nottingham. London’s venue and performers are waiting final confirmation.

Full details of the evening gigs and more information about the bands taking part can be found on the Sound Advice website www.soundadvicetour.co.uk. The site also contains information about panellists and seminar content, details on how to register for the day-time seminars, ticket details for each gig and useful links to all of the industry organisations taking part in Sound Advice.

Sound Advice starts at London’s BRIT School on October 21st and then visits The Garage at the University of the West of Scotland, Glasgow (22nd); the Paul McCartney Auditorium at Liverpool’s Institute of Performing Arts (23rd); The Life Café, Manchester (24th); and The Broadway Media Centre, One Live Café, Nottingham (25th).

BBC Radio 1 OneMusic will be hosting the final seminar under the banner of Radio 1's One Live in Nottingham event. Tickets for this seminar will be available to the general public and are not exclusively reserved for students on accredited music courses.

July 2002 Press Release: Sound Advice from the Music Industry

The five-day event, which is to run from October 21st to 25th, will provide music students around the country with invaluable advice from leading industry figures about key issues affecting the industry and the various sectors upon which their future careers might depend.

Each of the organisations involved will provide expert panellists who will participate in panel discussions covering the creative, business, and rights and royalties aspects of the music business and have the opportunity to comment on such central issues as the importance of live music, the value of copyright and the role of music education and training in safeguarding the future of the business.

Sound Advice kicks off at London’s BRIT School on October 21st with consecutive visits to the University of the West of Scotland in Glasgow, Liverpool’s Institute of Performing Arts, Manchester City College and Nottingham. BBC Radio 1 OneMusic, part of Radio 1's website, will be hosting the final seminar in Nottingham as part of Radio 1's One Live in Nottingham event.

To highlight the importance of live music to the industry, each day will conclude with an evening gig which will be open to the general public, at a local venue, that will showcase three unsigned local bands.

Sound Advice marks the first time that the organisations have come together in support of music business education and live music. The participants want to highlight the value of British music and ensure that we protect the future of this diverse and highly successful industry.

Allan Dumbreck, Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative and Cultural industries at the University of the West of Scotland and chair of the Roadshow steering group says: “The value of having unilateral support from across the industry for this initiative is immense. Students throughout the UK will benefit from the opportunity to hear and meet an unparalleled level of industry speaker.”

“We expect to reach up to 2,500 students across the five-day tour, plus a much larger number of people who will have the opportunity to support local emerging talent at the evening gigs,” Dumbreck comments. “This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn more about the key issues that affect the entire music industry and the various directions in which their future careers might take them.”

Radio 1 OneMusic Executive Producer, Jane Bolger, adds: "Radio 1 invests in new music and this is a great opportunity for us to support the people who will be making and shaping the new music of the future. The aims of this initiative are very much in line with those of our OneMusic project, giving our audience credible information and an opportunity to learn first-hand from key people in the music industry.”
