Alcohol and Drug Studies

Course Structure

All of the courses are taught on a modular basis and involve studying compulsory and optional modules. This means that for most of the courses, depending on the mode of study you choose, there are a number of different routes towards any particular qualification.

Essentially, the courses consist of a set number of modules:

The Postgraduate Certificates is awarded on successful completion of 3 modules.

The Postgraduate Diplomas is awarded on successful completion of 6 modules.

The Masters course is awarded on successful completion of 9 modules.

Study programme

A total of 8 postgraduate modules are available, all of which are 20 credit points and were validated at level 11 (Masters Level ) in February 2008. Depending on which programme you enrol for you will be able to choose to study at least some of these modules. Most modules can be studied on a stand-alone basis.

Responding to Substance Use and Addiction
(compulsory )
Research Methods (compulsory for Diploma Students)
Practice Placement (can be either practice or research focused)
Applied Theory ReviewPractice of Change (elective) Research Philosphy (elective) Research Project (MSc only, triple module)

The modules in bold are core modules and must be studied for all exit awards.

In 2004 I was enrolled as a PhD student within the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Studies at the University looking at normative beleifs and 'binge' drinking among University students. I was also a Tutor on the Critical Review and research Methods modules. Prior to this I spent 9 months working for Greater Glasgow Health Board as an Assistant Psychologist in the adolescent deliberate self harm service. I successfully completed my PhD in Jube 2008
