Qualifications:

BA (Hons) Psychology University of Strathclyde 1975; Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW),  University of Edinburgh.Postgraduate Diploma in Alcohol Studies, Paisley College, 1981

I have over thirty years experience in the field of alcohol and drug issues: dealing with alcohol and drug issues both in specialist addiction services as well as non specialist settings as well as from a higher education and research perspective. In that time I have delivered training and skill development, using evidence based methods intervention methods, to professional staff from various backgrounds: health social work/care medicine. My role as programme leader for the MSc/Post Graduate Programmes in Alcohol and Drug Studies (level 11SCQF) since 1987 forms a major part of my activity encompassing programme design, design of programme content and materials as well as direct teaching. In recent years this has developed to encompass blended learning where there is an integration of learning for both campus attending students as well as distance learners. All these developments in learning and teaching have been a result of collaboration with colleagues in the subject area and more widely across the University. Undergraduate teaching delivery (level 9 SCQF) is carried out across all UWS campuses (, Ayr, Dumfries, Hamilton and Paisley) and forms part of the BSc Inter Professional Studies.

I have acted in a consultant and expert capacity to the courts, media, government and professional bodies (Scottish Inter-collegiate Guidelines Network, SIGN) on matters concerning alcohol/ drugs and the effectiveness of policy and interventions in reducing associated harm. In collaboration with colleagues, I have developed and run international conferences on addiction, hosted by the University and on occasion in partnership with a professional body ( Association of Nurses in Substance Abuse, ANSA).

The subject of alcohol/drug use and problems fascinates me, both from a practical as well as research point of view. Overall I am interested in improving the lot of people with drug and alcohol related problems. This interest ranges from improved interventions and services for those affected as well as effective social and health policy, which may prevent or reduce harm, but also minimise the stigma, which individuals may endure. Hopefully this is apparent and reflected in my teaching and research activities.
