Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR)

The Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR) is a strategic collaboration between twelve of Scotland's universities, including the University of the West of Scotland, and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) to provide a range of opportunities for conducting relevant and applied policing research.

The activities of SIPR are organized around three thematic Networks:

Police-Community Relations - focusing on the relationships between police and different social, cultural and economic communities.

Evidence and Investigation - focusing on the role of the police in the recovery, interpretation and effective use of intelligence and evidence in the investigation of crime.

Police Organisation - focusing on the internal dynamics of police organisations, including issues of management, policy, policing strategies and leadership.

Each network is run by a Network Steering Group consisting of academics and police practitioners.  The Centre is particularly involved in Network 3, which reflects its research interests in police organisation, governance and accountability, and members of the Centre’s staff are part of that Steering Group.

Involvement by the Centre in SIPR projects includes:
Seminars

Contributing to the Networks’ seminar programmes which bring together academics and practitioners to discuss research findings and their implications for policing in Scotland.

PublicationsContributions to the ‘Research Resources’ and ‘Research Papers and Reports’ sections of the SIPR website.

Research Projects

Involvement in supervision of major research projects under the SIPR Post-Doctoral Research Assistantship and PhD Studentship schemes.

Practitioner Fellowships

These Fellowships are aimed at all practitioners involved with policing in Scotland, including police officers and police staff.  The Centre is available to host and support practitioners who, with the agreement of their employers, are looking for an opportunity to work with academic staff on the practical applications of a policing topic or issue.
