Dr Edward Edgerton is a lecturer in the School of Social Sciences and specialises in the teaching of Individual Differences, Environmental Psychology and Research methods and Statistics. He is an active researcher with expertise in Environmental Psychology and his primary interest is in understanding the role of school building design on students and staff.  He is also involved in research on other ‘institutional’ environments such as hospitals with a particular focus on environmental design for individuals with dementia. Dr Edgerton has also conducted research aimed at understanding public participation in pro-environmental behaviours such as newspaper recycling, home-composting schemes, etc.

Recent projects include (i) an evaluation of the secondary school building programme that was undertaken by Glasgow City Council (Project 2002) (ii) an investigation into public participation in home-composting schemes promoted by a number of local authorities (iii) a collaborative project with artists to redesign (“de-institutionalise) specific spaces within a psychiatric hospital.

Dr Edgerton is currently the secretary for the International Association of Person-Environment Studies (IAPS).
