Profoessor John MacDonald is currently the Dean of the School of Social Sciences in addition to holding a personal chair. He joined the University in 2001, having previously been at the University of Portsmouth, where he was Head of Psychology. He is a Chartered Psychologist and member of the British Psychological Society, and sits on a number of committees concerned with psychology education. His interests are broadly in the area of applied aspects of cognitive psychology, particularly how these relate to speech, language and literacy. His most well known and most cited research is in the area of auditory-visual speech processing, where he was one of the discoverers of the ‘McGurk’ effect. He has carried out research investigating the relationship between memory, speech, language and reading, in typically developing and learning disabled children. More recently he has been studying the cognitive aspects of mood. Current projects that he has been involved with include: investigation of literacy levels and health promotion literature, depression and suicidal ideation in young people; and the use of bibliotherapy in helping people with mild mental health problems.
