Staff Profile
Michael Pugh is currently researching and writing his PhD thesis: ‘Once Proud Burghs’, Partick and Govan c.1850-1925: Community and the Politics of Autonomy, Annexation and Assimilation (ongoing, anticipated 2010) This is a socio-political history of the Glasgow communities of Govan and Partick from c. 1850-1920, and their pioneering efforts in local self-government. It involves the analysis of municipal and parliamentary developments and the formation of local elites and political culture, set against the broader backdrop of c.19th and 20th Scottish political life and the fortunes of the Liberal party. Elements of this will be published in due course. His research interests are already reflected in his teaching of Scottish and British political history at third year and honours level.
