Subject Groups
The School is organised into three subject groupings, each led by a senior colleague:
Politics and Sociology
This group of 14 academic staff was formed in August 2003 by merging two formerly separate groups. The group has teaching and research in each constituent discipline and is based on inter-disciplinary perspectives. The group delivers single honours degrees in sociology and in European studies, and joint honours degrees in those subjects and in political science. The group contributes to undergraduate programmes in health studies, nursing, midwifery, sports studies and media studies, and postgraduate programmes in alcohol and drug studies and careers guidance.
Psychology
The Psychology group of 12 academic staff delivers programmes accredited by the British Psychological Society with the Graduate Basis for Registration through both BA and BSc honours courses, and also contributes to joint honours programmes in combination with other science and social science disciplines. Inputs are also made to a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including in Health Studies, Computer Science, Business and Education.
Social Policy and Social Work
This group of 16 staff incorporates Health Studies and the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Studies. It offers research, training, and consultancy services together with a Masters programme in Alcohol and Drug Studies. This programme is available in class room and e-learning formats. The Group offers honours degrees in social policy and in social work. In the latter field, the School is a partner in the newly formed Scottish Institute for Excellence in Social work Education and is working with others to develop the curriculum for the new honours degree qualification in social work. The group also supports a postgraduate professional qualification in Careers Guidance and has strong links with employers and professional bodies in that field.
