"Scotland: Ten Years On" was an international two-day conference held at Glasgow Caledonian University on the 18th to 19th June 2009. The conference was jointly organised by colleagues from the University of the West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Glasgow.
The conference programme is available here
The conference saw 50 academics, drawn from institutions across the globe, present papers on a wide variety of issues and areas, covering such matters as elections, parties, the Scottish Parliament, poverty, gender, nationalism, identity, Scotland in a comparative context, and the discourse of devolution, as well as many others. The keynote speakers at the conference were four leading scholars:
Professor John Curtice, University of Strathclyde
So has devolution worked? The public's reaction
Professor David Denver, University of Lancaster
Scottish Parliament Elections 1999-2007: An Overview
Professor Murray Pittock, University of Glasgow
The Road to Independence?
Professor Susan Condor, University of Lancaster
English people's attitudes towards devolution
These keynote speakers addressed the conference at two plenary sessions on Thursday 18th June.
A civic reception was held at the Glasgow City Chambers, on the Thursday evening at 7PM. The conference gratefully acknowledges the kind generosity of Glasgow City Concil and our Host for the evening, Ballie Mailk. His civic greeting was especially gracious and welcoming. The reply was given, on behalf of the delegates, by Professor Seamus McDaid, Principal of UWS.
The reception was addressed by our special guest, Ann McKechin MP, Under Secretary of State at the Scotland Office.
The programme for Friday, 19th June started at 10AM, and the keynote address for that morning was given by Nicola Sturgeon, MSP, Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing.
A closing pleanry session, given by Professor John Curtice and Ms Amy Rodger, head of ERS (Scotland), considered the events of the past ten years - and possible avenues for Scotland in the future.
