Enabling Support

Assistive Technology Suites

Paisley Campus

The Assitive Technology Suite is located within the Enabling Support area - J Block Level 3 (off ICT Computing Laboratories). The Suite contains some of the latest assistive technology to help those with special needs or disabilities. It's also equipped with ergonomic seating and height adjustable desks.

The Suite serves several purposes for:

  • students to use the technology on-campus
  • demonstrating software or for training
  • for undertaking needs assessments

The following equipment and software is available:

CCTV

This is a device which allows magnification or colour changing of text. Printed materials (e.g. library books, lecture notes etc) are placed on a plate which is viewed through a monitor. Magnification can be altered to an individual's requirements. There are standard interchangeable colour schemes which can be used to change text and background colours (e.g. white text on a blue background).

The CCTV is useful to people with visual impairment or who are dyslexic. A CCTV is also located on Level 3 of the Library.

ScannaR: (Scan and Read)

This is a compact flat bed scanner that will automatically scan text, and then read it aloud to you. You can also view the text being read via the monitor.

Personal Computers

Computers are probably the single most important item of equipment for helping those with disabilities. The A.T Suite has 11 computers with different types of specialist software and a few have different typefaces for the keyboard. All computer stations are equipped with scanners and headphones and are connected to a black and white laser printer in the Suite.

As with all student computers in the Campus, Microsoft Office 2007, Inspiration and Read & Write Gold are installed as core software.
