ENABLING SUPPORT:
EQUIPMENT & ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LOAN BANK
Why would I need a loan of equipment?
Enabling Support staff recognise that some students may be at a disadvantage if they are not able to use the specialist equipment, software or technology which is recommended for their use following an assessment of their needs. To that end, we offer some of the most commonly used forms of equipment, software and technology to qualifying students on a loan basis from all 4 campus locations.
How long will the loan last?
These loans are usually short term support measures designed only to assist disabled students until such times as they receive their own equipment, software and technology from the Disabled Student Allowance, however on some occasions, i.e. When the student does not qualify for DSA funding the loan can be over an extended period of time.
Who decides what loan equipment I need?
The equipment which will be loaned to a disabled student will be decided after an Advisor has met with the disabled student, and they have discussed the support requirements of the student with the campus Assistive Technology Demonstrator. As part of this discussion the length of loan will be agreed, and a decision regarding appropriate loan equipment will be made.
What type of equipment can I take on loan?
The most common items of equipment loaned to students by the University are
- Laptop or Netbook computers with either dyslexia specific, screen reading, text magnification or dictation software.
- Digital voice recorders to allow students to record lectures (Subject to appropriate guidance and agreements).
What does the University need from me before I can take loan of equipment?
Any disabled student who takes loan of any form of equipment, software or technology will be required to sign a binding agreement which states the loan period, and which outlines the University debt recovery policy, which is implemented should an item of equipment, software or technology not be returned.
The loan is designed to assist disabled students overcome the significant barriers which they may experience during their course as a result of their disability, illness or learning difficulty, however we at Enabling Support trust that loan equipment will be returned on time, and in the same condition as on commencement of the loan period.
