Placement Student Testimonial

Name: Katie Duffy
Organisation: National Air Traffic Services
Degree: BSc (Hons) Software Engineering

I completed a year in industry as part of my course between second and third year. I loved the change of environment and the challenge it offered me, in addition to the opportunity to develop my technical and ‘soft’ skills. I found the experience of working in industry invaluable, and benefited me upon my return to university.

Towards the end of the paid placement, my employer expressed interest in extending my employment with part time work on my return to my course.

As a result of successful continual employment, I was offered an interview for the company’s graduate scheme. I attended an interview and assessment day, with advice and support from colleagues in my current section, and was successful. I have since been offered a place on the IET accredited graduate scheme upon successful completion of my Honours year.

The placement offered me more benefits and opportunities than I realised when I first applied. Two years on, I am still realising the benefits from it. My workplace mentor recently supported my nomination to become a student representative for the British Computer Society. I have since been elected as the National IT Student Body Ambassador by the student members of the BCS. None of this would have been possible without the initial placement I obtained through the Employability Link.
