UWS Volunteer Accreditation Scheme
The UWS Volunteer Accreditation Scheme is a new initiative which has been created to make sure you are recognised for the time you give up to volunteer for the university, students association or other organisations.
The scheme will reward and recognise students’ voluntary work whether it is part of coursework or curricular activities. So if you are a student who is a student rep, club or society member, our doing a voluntary placement for you course or are involved in other volunteering or campaigning activity you can become part of this new accreditation scheme.
It is a great way of building your transferable skills (which is a phrase you’ll hear a lot of this year) and can be included in your PDP or portfolio.
The scheme will take account of the skills you develop while being a volunteer and will recognise this work on three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold. Training will be provided at each level and will enable you to develop your skill base and build your CV.

Why Volunteer?
At UWS we value and support volunteering activity. We work in partnership with local volunteer centres on each campus and this gives us access to a huge range of opportunities on their database. We have our own volunteering links with local organisations, and don’t forget on campus there are opportunities to take on a voluntary position at the students union or as a student representative.
Students volunteer in many ways. Volunteering can include befriending, taking part in conservation work, setting up or updating a website or devising a marketing campaign for a local charity.
The reasons for taking part are equally varied. Some people volunteer because they want to put something back into the community; others are passionate about a particular subject and want to get involved. It may be something completely different from your normal day to day studies or work or it might be tied very closely to your course. International students often volunteer in order to meet people from the local area and to practice their English.
Volunteering can have many benefits in terms of the skills you learn and the wider network of contacts you can make. It is also a rewarding activity that can give enormous sense of satisfaction. It doesn’t have to involve a huge time commitment – an hour a week can make a difference.
Go on! Take the next step to gaining skills and the experiencing the fun and satisfaction of voluntary work.
