Retention and Success

These resources will help support retention and success at UWS.

Widening Access

UWS is recognised for widening participation and access to Higher Education. In 2017/ 18, 27.7% of our Scottish-based undergraduate entrants were from the 20% most deprived postcodes in Scotland (measured through the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation) (UWS 2018). One third of our student population comes from colleges and over 90% of UWS courses allow direct entry to year 2 (with an HNC) or year 3 (within an HND) (UWS 2019)

Some resources that may help support you in your practice as related to widening participation and access include:

  • Information about FOCUS West- an educational support and guidance programme designed to widen access to higher education in the West of Scotland, including to The University of West of Scotland. The organisation works in 37 schools in the West of Scotland that have the lowest progression rates to Higher Education.

The target set by the First Minister is for 20% of students from Scotland’s most deprived backgrounds to represent 20% of entrants to Higher Education by 2030.
