the lab
Our biomechanics laboratory, located inside our £110 million state-of-the-art Lanarkshire Campus, allows students and researchers to explore how our bodies work, through analysis of exercise. Sport and exercise biomechanics focuses on the mechanics of human movement.
The laboratory can be used for a range of purposes, including to enhance performance, inform training and rehabilitation plans, analyse differences between an individual’s limbs and muscles, and inform the development of healthcare products.

state-of-the-art
World-class equipment within the laboratory includes a ten camera Vicon Vantage V8 Motion Analysis System (for 3D Motion Analysis), Four Kistler Force Plates (for force output measurements and centre of pressure measurements), twelve channel Delsys Electromyography System (for muscle activity measurements), Video Camera Systems (for 2D video assessments) etc.
Since opening, the biomechanics laboratory has been used by the Scotland women’s national football team, Ross County Football Club, Celtic Women’s Football Club and the Scottish Football Association. It is fully equipped to support athletes across a wide range of sports.

multi-purpose
The biomechanics laboratory can also be used by other areas and disciplines outwith sport, including applied biomechanics and ergonomics, product validation, clinical biomechanics and rehabilitation. For example, as part of a broader corporate partnership between UWS and the professional basketball team Glasgow Rocks, academic staff consulted on and provided support for the planning and completion of an applied research project pertaining to the area of strength and conditioning.
