Kath was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at UWS in 2010 and promoted to Reader in 2017. Prior to joining UWS, she held her first academic post as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer at Plymouth University and has a PhD. from the University of Glasgow. Kath has a degree in Marine Biology from the University of Wales, Swansea and her core subject area is Aquatic Ecology, in which she is an active, internationally-recognised researcher, currently supervising five PhD students. In 2013 she was awarded the Fisheries Society for the British Isles medal which is awarded for exceptional advances in the study of fish biology and/or fisheries science and in 2006 was awarded the Society of Experimental Biology President’s Medal for her contribution to the field of animal biology.
Throughout her career Kath has led a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, a degree course, run international and national field courses and co-ordinated teaching research projects. In 2015 she was awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. Kath collaborates with other UWS staff, industry, national and international researchers. She is actively involved in CPD through her Fellowship of the Royal Society of Biology and Chartered Biologist status. She was a member of the UWS institutional self-assessment team for the successful Bronze Athena SWAN application.
