planned Industrial Action
Updates and information for students regarding scheduled industrial action
As you may be aware, industrial action is due to take place across the UK higher education sector, including at University of the West of Scotland.
Our key priority is to minimise the impact of industrial action on our students, and to the delivery of learning and teaching, assessment, and the overall student experience.
The Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) is calling on its members to take two days of discontinuous strike action on 27 January and 1 February 2023 – and the University and College Union (UCU) is calling on its members to take 18 days of discontinuous industrial action between 1 February and 22 March 2023 (inclusive) – in support of their disputes over the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES).
We appreciate that not all colleagues will participate in this action and are not members of the EIS and or UCU.
The University Executive has agreed that any pay deductions from colleagues participating in strike action will be allocated to the student hardship fund.
Guidance and support for students
At UWS, we’re absolutely committed to ensuring our students feel supported. Below, you’ll find a range of guidance and support for students during this period, which we’ll update as more information becomes available.
Impact on studies
In the event that the proposed strike action takes place, some of your scheduled teaching activities may be cancelled. Your Programme Leader will be in touch to advise of any activities that are cancelled. There may also be some classes that take place on days of proposed strike action, and you’ll be expected to attend those activities as normal.
If any of your scheduled activity is cancelled, you should use your programme resources on Aula or Moodle to continue your learning for your programme.
Your School will ensure any future assessments will not cover content that was not taught as a result of the industrial action.
Attending classes
You’ll be expected to attend all scheduled activities that aren’t cancelled during any industrial action. This includes any classes, assessments or activities which contribute towards the overall grade for your modules and programme, such as tests, presentations or assessed class participation. If any of these activities are cancelled as a result of industrial action, your Programme Leader will be in touch to advise on alternative arrangements where appropriate.
Using University facilities
The University will remain open as normal during the planned industrial action, so you’ll be able to attend campus and use facilities such as the library and social learning spaces to study. Our Student Services, such as The Student Hub, will also be operating as normal, although there may be delays in responses from some areas.
Many of our scheduled academic activities will also operate as normal, although – due to the industrial action – they may be resourced by fewer staff.
Assessment
Assessment diet
At this point in time, it is not anticipated that the upcoming diet of assessment will be affected by this proposed industrial action and it is currently scheduled to continue as planned.
Assessment content
Our Schools will ensure that assessment questions for tests, coursework and exams accurately reflect the content delivered during the term. In the event that an assessment question covers content not delivered to you as a result of the strike action, our School Assessment Boards will take these circumstances into consideration.
Coursework deadlines
You should continue to work towards submitting any coursework that has been set as part of your programme, in line with the deadlines that have been set. You should assume that the normal penalties for late or non-submission of coursework will still apply, even if deadlines fall on planned strike days.
Coursework feedback
Wherever possible, Schools will continue to meet the agreed deadlines in providing feedback to you. However, due to the planned industrial action, there may be occasions where this isn’t possible. In order to minimise delays, we’ve asked our academic staff to prioritise teaching and assessment activities over their other work.
