Dr Brendon Stubbs research focuses on physical activity and mental health and the mind-body interface. Brendon has published over 500 International academic papers. He is in the top 1% of highly cited researchers in the world in the field of mental health (Web of Science).
Brendon was lead author of the recently published European Psychiatric Association guidelines on the use of exercise for mental health and senior author on a recent Lancet commission to improve the physical health of people with mental health conditions. Brendon’s research has featured in multiple media outlets such as the New York Times, TIME magazine, Forbes, CNN, Women’s Health, Men’s Health, BBC news, ITV news and Sky News (among others). Brendon has also has number 1 podcasts with Dr Rangan Chatterjee and Deliciously Ella. Brendon continues to work clinically helping people with severe and enduring mental illness in South London.
Ulf Ekelund is currently professor in Physical Activity and Health at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences and holds a senior researcher position in physical activity and public health at the Norwegian Public Health Institute (20%). Before moving to the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences in 2012, I lead a research program in physical activity epidemiology at the MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, UK.
During the last 20 years, I have co-led or led several large international research projects, including the European Youth Heart Study and the International Children Accelerometer database (ICAD), the world largest pooled database of device measured physical activity in young people. I am currently leading an international consortium examining the dose-response and joint associations between device-based measures of sedentary time and physical activity with mortality.
I have lead work packages in several EU funded research projects such as the InterAct and DEDIPAC projects. Other major international projects include the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Lancet series on physical activity and health. I also serve on the steering committee for the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA) and have served as on the American College of Sports Medicine board of trustees (2016-2019). I served on the International Society for Physical Activity and Health executive committee between 2012 and 2016. I currently serve on the WHO physical activity guideline development group and was an international expert for the UK 2018 physical activity guidelines. I serve on the editorial board for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Journal of Physical Activity and Health and the Journal of Sport Sciences.
My main research areas include assessment of physical activity and sedentary time; patterns and trends in population levels of physical activity; the role of sedentary time and physical activity for preventing chronic diseases; and early life determinants of physical activity behaviors and its interaction with health outcomes across the life course. I have published more than 350 original publications since 2000 including papers in The Lancet, JAMA, and The BMJ. Three of my papers have been listed on the Altmetric Top 100 list in 2012, 2016 and 2019. My current H-index is 80 and I was listed as highly cited researcher in 2018 and 2019 by Clarivate analytics.
Stuart Biddle is Professor of Physical Activity & Health and Director of the Centre for Health Research at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. His work specialises in psychological, behavioural and public health aspects of sedentary behaviour and physical activity. He started studying screen time in young people in 2001 and has maintained an interest over the past two decades. His co-authored book ‘Psychology of Physical Activity’ (Routledge) is currently being revised for a 4th edition. He is a Web of Science highly cited researcher for 2018 & 2019.
Guy Faulkner is a Professor and Chair in Applied Public Health in the School of Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Broadly, his research has focused on two inter-related themes: the development and evaluation of physical activity interventions; and physical activity and mental health. A particular focus of recent research has been on how best to get more people with depression, more active, more often. He chairs the ParticipACTION research advisory group is a member of the Research Work Group for the Canadian Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth, and Adults. He has contributed to the development of the Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines for children and youth (2015-2017), the early years (2016-2018), and now adults and older adults (2019-2020). He is the founding editor of the Elsevier journal 'Mental Health and Physical Activity'.
David Dunstan is Head of the Physical Activity laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne and is a Professorial Fellow at the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research, Austrlia. His multi-disciplinary research program has provided substantial contributions to the evidence base on the adverse health consequences of too much sitting and the potential health benefits resulting from frequently breaking up sitting time. He has an extensive track record in the design and management of clinical/laboratory and health behaviour intervention trials involving chronic disease subgroups in real-world settings and large scale epidemiological studies. His team has been a major international contributor to sedentary behaviour research, building on the initial observational-study evidence to provide experimental findings from laboratory studies and real-world intervention and implementation trials. The findings have stimulated serious consideration of novel preventive and therapeutic strategies to support the simplified public health and clinical practice message to ‘sit less and move more’.
