Our accommodation has remained open to our students, providing a welcoming and supportive environment, and our residences will be available when students arrive on our Ayr and Paisley campuses. Please rest assured that we will do all we can to support our students, including facilitating early entry, if required, to our residences at no extra charge, where students will receive appropriate support. You can find out more and apply for UWS student accommodation here.
The Scottish Government has published updated guidance which explains how the current restrictions on social gatherings apply to students living away from home.
We strongly encourage you to familiarise yourself with the new guidance, which sits alongside wider Scottish Government essential advice. The guidance provides detail on:
- returning home for a visit or short stay
- returning home whilst self-isolating
- returning home on a permanent basis
To limit the number of people in residences at any one time, in line with public health guidance, we will not permit any visitors and non-UWS residents into our buildings. No overnight guest requests will be granted and, although you can still be accompanied on arrival day, only the person named on the lease will be able to enter the building. In line with the latest government guidelines, you must not meet with people from other households in indoor household settings at any time. This includes visiting other flats within our residences.
Find out more about what you can expect when you arrive at the UWS residences in September 2020 here.
Q: With term starting later at UWS this year, do I still have to pay rent from the original start date?
A: Commencement of term is on 28th September 2020, and we can confirm that lease agreements have been amended to reflect this change to your start date. As a result, the residences lease will now commence on 21st September 2020 and you will see from your offer that rent payments have therefore been recalculated accordingly.
Q: I have a space booked in UWS accommodation and was hoping to arrive before the residence lease start date of 21st September in order to quarantine – will I be able to do this and will I be charged?
A: We understand how difficult a time this is, especially for students coming to study from overseas and we are doing everything we can to help support you to do this. As a result we can confirm that you will be able to access your space in our residences in advance of 21st September in order to quarantine and there will be no extra charge for arriving early. We are currently advising anyone needing to quarantine to arrive around Monday 7th September.
Q: What happens if I am unable to take up my place in the residences for reasons relating to COVID-19?
A: Under UWS’s accommodation agreement, if you enrol at the University, but due to quarantine restrictions, official travel restrictions, public health restrictions or other Covid-19-related advisories being in place and you are prevented from travelling to the University campus, you can cancel your accommodation agreement without being liable for any rental payment, with any deposit you have paid being returned to you.
Q: Will all students be arriving at accommodation at the same time?
A: Given that Covid-19 is a fast-moving and fluid situation, it could mean that not all students are able to arrive at our accommodation on the 21st September as planned. If we do need to change the date on which you arrive at our accommodation, we will let you know as soon as possible and seek to agree a new date with you.
Q: When I arrive at the residences to move into my room will social distancing measures be in place?
A: Yes. Our team have been working hard to transform the residences with new signage and directional instructions to ensure the safety of all our resident students and our team. Our arrival period will look slightly different this year and will take place mostly outside. Once you enter the building please adhere to signage instructions regarding distancing, one way systems and limits on the number of students that can be in one place at a time. Our team will be in touch with instructions regarding the arrival process and to book an arrival time slot with you. We would kindly ask any students arriving complete a period of quarantine, wear face coverings and use the sanitisers provided when entering our buildings.
Q: If I have to quarantine, will I be able to do this in UWS residences?
A: You may be aware that the UK Government has introduced a 14-day quarantine for people arriving from certain overseas countries into the UK. You can find more information here. In summary, you will have to provide your journey and contact details on an online form 48 hours or less before you travel to the UK and you will not be allowed to leave the place where you are staying in the UK for your first 14 days, except in very limited situations.
Q: If I’m completing a 14-day quarantine period, how will I be able to access supplies like food?
A: Our residence team will arrange a welcome food pack and cleaning pack for your arrival and this will be placed in your room. We can also supply linen should you require it during the 14 day period. Our team will then remain in regular contact with you to ensure we top up any items you require before the 14 day period ends. You are also welcome to arrange food deliveries from supermarkets and take away restaurants. Our team will place these outside your main flat door when they arrive for you to collect.
Q: How to I access any mail or parcels that are delivered during my 14-day quarantine period?
A: We will make arrangements directly with you when items are delivered and these items will be placed outside your door for you to collect safely.
Q: What support will be in place for me during my 14-day quarantine period?
A: Our team are on site 24 hours per day, 7 days a week should you require support and the welcome guide in your bedroom has a list of contact numbers and email addresses you can use to contact us. We also have a Res Life team that are available out with our office hours to assist you.
Our team will arrange regular telephone and video calls with you throughout your quarantine period and we’re here any time you need us for support outwith these arranged times too.
Our International Student Support Team are also available with a range of support which will be communicated to you.
Q: Will there be social events in the residences this year?
A: Yes, although these might look slightly different to our usual approach. We’ll still be hosting different events, some of which may have to take place virtually but there will still be something for everyone and we’ll assess our approach regularly as government guidelines change. We would still encourage you to take part in as many of our virtual events as you can – it’s the best way to meet other students staying in our residences.
